Kansas City BREAKING WEATHER: Flood Advisory In Effect

FLOOD ADVISORY
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE KANSAS CITY/PLEASANT HILL MO
1049 AM CDT FRI SEP 12 2008

...URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR JOHNSON COUNTY IN EAST CENTRAL KANSAS... AND WYANDOTTE AND SOUTHERN LEAVENWORTH COUNTIES IN NORTHEAST KANSAS... AND JACKSON AND CASS COUNTIES IN WEST CENTRAL MISSOURI UNTIL 500 PM CDT FRIDAY...

AT 1035 AM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED AN AREA OF VERY HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA. DOPPLER RADAR ESTIMATED THAT BETWEEN ONE AND TWO AND A HALF INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA THIS MORNING. PORTIONS OF CASS COUNTY REMAIN UNDER A FLOOD WARNING UNTIL 130 PM...WHERE IN EXCESS OF 4 INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN SO FAR.

HEAVY RAIN CONTINUES TO FALL ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA. RUNOFF FROM THIS EXCESSIVE RAINFALL WILL CAUSE MINOR FLOODING TO OCCUR... ESPECIALLY AT LOW WATER CROSSINGS AND UNDERPASSES.
SOME LOCATIONS THAT WILL EXPERIENCE FLOODING INCLUDE... BASEHOR... BELTON... BLUE SPRINGS... BONNER SPRINGS... BUCKNER... DE SOTO... EDGERTON... EDWARDSVILLE... FAIRWAY... GARDEN CITY... GARDNER... GRAIN VALLEY... GRANDVIEW... GREENWOOD... HARRISONVILLE... INDEPENDENCE... KANSAS CITY... KANSAS CITY KANSAS... LAKE LOTAWANA... LAKE QUIVIRA... LEAWOOD... LEE`S SUMMIT... LENEXA... MERRIAM... MISSION... MISSION HILLS... NORTH KANSAS CITY... OAK GROVE... OLATHE AND OVERLAND PARK.

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM THIS STORM WILL CAUSE MINOR FLOODING OF SMALL CREEKS AND STREAMS... URBAN AREAS... HIGHWAYS... STREETS AND UNDERPASSES AS WELL AS OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS AND LOW LYING SPOTS.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS SAFELY.

IN HILLY TERRAIN...THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF LOW WATER CROSSINGS WHICH ARE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS IN HEAVY RAIN. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL ACROSS FLOODED ROADS. FIND ALTERNATE ROUTES. IT ONLY TAKES A FEW INCHES OF SWIFTLY FLOWING WATER TO CARRY VEHICLES AWAY.

REPORT FLOODING TO THE NEAREST LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY SO THAT THEY MAY TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION TO CLOSE FLOODED ROADWAYS. THEY WILL RELAY YOUR REPORT TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PLEASANT HILL.
