Metro Kansas City's BREAKING NEWS: High-Rise Full Of Elderly Evacuated In Raytown-MO

It was reported to be an electrical fire at Temple Heights- a multi-story building occupied by elderly residents in the 5400 block of Blue Ridge Cutoff.

June 26-27 KC-MO Sobriety Checkpoint Yields Neglible Results

E
arly this Saturday morning- the citizens of KC-MO and my ears were graced by a sobriety checkpoint at 29th Street and U.S.71/Watkins Expressway.

The STAR reports that out of 1371 vehicles checked in the Big Brother roundup that went from 10pm Friday night to 4am this morning- there were only 13 DUI arrests or about 1% of the total drivers stopped.

That's right- one percent.

I heard one motorist try to elude the checkpoint around 2:3o am and that resulted in a vehicle pursuit at reported speeds of around 100 mph.

That chase went into Kansas- and possibly returned to KC-MO where- around 3:09 am- a Kansas State Patrol trooper watched the chased vehicle crash on Forest just south of Linwood.

Fortunately- no innocent motorists were injured during this week's sobriety checkpoint pursuit.

Also during this checkpoint- several KC-MO police patrol "zones" were "blacked-out"- or without in-service police officers to run other more minor calls- like shots fired- domestic violence assaults- wrecks- etc..

Your tax dollars efficiently at work....

Metro Kansas City Can't Shake Daily Thunderstorms

T
oday will mark the 3rd day in a row that afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms will grace our skies.

It will also mark the 3rd day in a row we've been near or (today) in a "slight risk" area for forecasted severe thunderstorms.

That risk area appears to remain along and east of I-35 in Missouri- then east of the state line south of K.C..

More worrysome is again the risk of torrential rainfall.

Last evening- Turkey Creek got within 3 feet of it's 61-foot flood stage at Southwest Boulevard in southeastern KC-KS..

More than 2.5-inches of rain fell in parts of the Turkey Creek watershed in less than an hour Wednesday.

KS Highway Patrol troopers came close to closing the northbound lanes of I-35 near I-635 when the creek approached the roadway. The last time the road was closed there due to flooding was in October of 1998.

There was a fear that a young person had been swept into the creek near 52nd Street and Merriam Drive- but police and fire department crews did not find anyone after an extensive search.

Brush Creek also approached flood stage near State Line Road last evening.

The additional rainfall has taken the June rainfall totals in some areas of Johnson County KS to near the one-foot mark.

Another round of heavy storms over those same areas could produce rapid flash flooding.

This morning's scattered showers and thunderstorms MAY reduce the risk of additional storms later today- but any strong heating will not sustain any reduction.

One good effect of the storms is that it won't get as hot as originally forecasted.

I'll be watching the situation....

"Slight Risk" of Severe Storms Again Today - Some K.C. Area Rainfall Totals So Far June 2009

A
fter last night's "surprise" thunderstorms that produced damage in Liberty-MO and Johnson and Wyandotte counties-KS (covered FIRST here at CSW during 6 pm TV newscasts)- there's yet a risk later today that some storms could become severe.

This risk is generally the northern half of the Kansas City MetroRegion- from the Kansas and Missouri rivers northward- as shown by this image courtesy of the NWS' Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

It has rained a lot in some areas of Metro K.C. so far this June.

Referring to the Johnson County "Stormwatch" rainfall totals image (click on image for full size)- you can see some areas in JoCo-KS have received just over 9-inches of rain.

With more rain in the forecast during the last 6 days of June- it's likely some areas will (or maybe already have) go over the 10-inch mark of total rainfall for June 2009.

Residents have been evacuated from 209 Belmont and at 7 pm- were being "allowed back in" to 217 Belmont.

Police also confirmed a convenience store's roof damaged when a power pole and transformer fell on it.

Police and fire department units report "numerous tree limbs and power lines down"- mostly in that part of Liberty to the east of I-35 from south of M-152 north to M-291.

An unknown- but large number of Liberty residents are without power- as heat indices again rise to the upper-90's to around 100-degrees.

No injuries have been reported as a direct result of the storm.

Within twenty-five minutes after the storm initially produced damage- the storm had nearly dissipated just north of Liberty.
