Rare Weather Satellite Photo

It's something I might have seen in the past 14 years of computer weather but is quite rare.

Looking at the visible satellite picture below (click for bigger image)- those are thunderstorms that traverse the area spanning those three red dots- which happens to be along the "spine" of North America- the Rocky Mountains.

That's at least 3,000 miles of an almost solid line of thunderstorms- stretching from Dot 1-North- Edmonton- Alberta-Canada region- through Montana, U.S.A. and the Black Hills- through Dot 2 Middle- Denver- Albuquerque- Dot 3 South- El Paso-TX- then into Mexico reaching almost to the Baja Gulf.

The Weather Channel

Is it just me or does it seem 'The Weather Channel' runs everything but weather?

I probably haven't watched 10 minutes of the Channel since 1996- when one June morning they stated that "a tornado caused extensive damage in Shawnee, KS (a KC 'burb)" when there was no tornado- or even high winds- IN or within 10 miles of Shawnee that night.

After 4 or 5 emails from me- they pulled that fantasy story without apology or correction.

Maybe that explains why they now run commercials out the yazoo and seemingly- anything but the current weather.

Even if they DID stick to weather- I wouldn't believe them though.

Suggestion: Stick To Religion- Stay Out Of Politics

Captain Spaulding is quite tolerant toward other people's religious views.
Anything that encourages humanity among all deserves respect- wars caused over differing religious beliefs notwithstanding.

All that I ask from folks of religion is that they keep it to themselves.

American Southern Baptists would love nothing better than to impose their religious beliefs on you- me and the rest of the country.

Republicans stand in line to pander to the Southern Baptists for their votes- seemingly forgetting the separation of church and state.

If the religion nuts start trying to take my freedoms away- I will become far- FAR less tolerant.

Notes From Funk's Front Porch - II

Here's Mayor Funkhouser's latest message to his constituants:

Notes From Funk's Front Porch
15 June 2007

Dear Folks,

The new members of the Parks Board were announced at a press conference this past Monday, in the pouring rain, and they were sworn into their positions on Tuesday. The make-up of this board is completely different from past boards and Funk has high hopes that they will be successful in bringing the parks system back to the regular folks. But, as you know, Funk has been getting a lot of flak for, well, for just about everything that he has been doing since becoming Mayor. We expected this to occur, as change makes people uncomfortable at first, even if the change is for the better. True to form, there is an upset over the political views of one of his appointments. While Funk does not agree with this appointment's political views, he does believe in diversity and unfortunately, diversity doesn't always look as good in real life as it does in the movies. We are hoping that when the fog clears, that people will see the historic diversity of this board, beginning with John Fierro, the first Hispanic President of the Parks Board - an honest and courageous man - and will embrace the board for the wonderful changes that they are ready to make.

The Mayor and Council office comes with a lot of perks, both big and small; we get gratuitous offers daily to just about everything: suite tickets to ball games, grand dinners, prime symphony and theater tickets, great parking places, black tie events - even the free use of a car. The abundance of perks is apparently normal. What is not normal is to be upfront and transparent in reporting the gifts, beyond the basic legal requirements, but this is exactly what Funk promises to continue to do.

The Mayor's blog, www.funksfrontporch.com, (that can eventually be linked from the Mayor's page of The city's website at www.kcmo.org) is up and running. The Communications Team has put a lot of thought into making this a dynamic site; a window into the workings of the Mayor’s office. From the blog you can look at anything from the Mayor's calendar to blog entries from the Mayor, and even to memos from the policy team. We plan on making this the finest and most informative government blog in the nation. Funk is happy with the site, as it is another way of keeping citizens informed about their government.

Funk went to his first town hall meeting last night. The chapel was filled to the brim with anxious and hopeful faces. The crowd was asked by one of the hosts of the event if they had ever seen a Mayor in the 3rd district - the crowd went wild; shouting, no, they had never seen a Mayor in their district before. The crowd went on to say that they had never had a Mayor ask them for their opinion or to inquire as to what he could do to help them. It was an uplifting kick-off to our town hall meetings, and we sensed that the crowd left even more hopeful and trusting that they would be included in their City's future decisions.

Funk stands in faith that the job that he seeks to do, to make this a city that works for regular folks, will indeed become a reality under his administration. While it's hard to hold onto faith in tough times, that is exactly what he is prepared to do. We hope that you will give him the time that is necessary to make those changes and will help keep the faith with us as it takes a fair amount of time to build the machinery before you can get the job done.
You can respond to this newsletter either at
funksfrontporch@gmail.com or at mayor@kcmo.org.

In faith.

All the best,
Gloria & Mark

Excuse me??? For a clown- not a very funny joke.

Top 10 Most Dangerous Intersections In Kansas City-MO.

The City Council recently discussed the traffic camera issue.

Cameras would be placed "at the city's most dangerous intersections" and "photograph license plates" of people running red lights- according to KCCG-Channel 2.

Looking at the latest list available of the city's most dangerous intersections is misleading.
All but two of the ten are intersections of city arterials. The other 8 involve freeways.

Crashes on the freeways are reported at the nearest cross street- which may give the impression all or even the majority of the crashes are occurring where the freeway ramps intersect that street.

The Top 10 list (as of November 2006) is:

Kansas City-MO Also Subsidizes Other Cities' Traumas

It happened just last weekend when 4 young men were shot in Kansas City, KS..

Police initally found only 1 victim- and he was taken to Truman Medical Center-West (TMC/West) because the University of Kansas (KU) Medical Center was "closed to trauma" patients.

Over the next several hours- the other 3 victims showed up at hospitals on their own- 2 went to TMC/West and the other showed up at "closed" KU Med Center.

Maybe the 3 shooting victims that ended up at TMC were KC-MO residents- that I do not know.

Nor do I know if the victims were able to pay for their treatment or filed as indigents.

What I DO know working news in this town for more than 15 years is that this is not an isolated case.

Johnson County and Wyandotte counties have only 1 certified trauma center each- Overland Park Regional for JoCo and KU Med Center for WyCo.

If one or both of those trauma centers are closed- chances are patients will end up at a KC-MO trauma center- Research- St. Luke's Plaza or TMC/West.

If a Kansas resident ends up at TMC and can't pay? We're stuck.

Why Not Just Ignore All Laws

Imagine if I sneak- say- into Canada. What do you think Canadian authorities would do if they find out I had snuck into their country?

Jail- probably. Deportation- surely.

So what's the big deal over this immigration bill? If people are here illegally- send them back.
If they have children born here- give those children a certificate that they were born in America (in case they want to return when they are adults) and send the children back with the parents.

What's the big deal? IL-LEG-AL!

If we're going to give every alien that snuck into this country amnesty- then let every person arrested for smoking or possessing marijuana out of jail/prison.

Why is it any more "illegal" to willingly put a substance in your own body than to sneak into somebody else's country?

No wonder people have little respect for either laws or the people that make them- pretzel-logic!

KANSAS CITY'S WEATHER: Torrential Rains Not That Far Away

Once again overnight- and continuing this morning- a virtually stationary band of showers and thunderstorms sat over north-central into southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri.

As shown on the Kansas City NWS graphic below- Doppler radar rain-estimates as much as 9-inches of rain has fallen in isolated areas of southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri.

There are number of flood or flash-flood warnings still in effect this Tuesday in southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas.

The precip area is trying to work it's way northeast - it's now in the southern and southwestern MetroRegion counties- Linn- Franklin to Shawnee counties KS..

There is a weak mid to low level low-pressure disturbance causing all this rain- it continues to meander around northeast to north Oklahoma into south and southeastern Kansas.

This disturbance will remain close to us again today through tomorrow and an eye will have to be kept if a band of showers and storms develop closer toward Metro K.C...

F-16 Forces Local Landing of "Suspicious Pilot"

I wondered what I was hearing on K.C.I. airport 'approach control' radio last night. Just before 8 pm last night I heard what sounded like an explosion- thunder- or a sonic boom here in southeast KC-MO..

I then fire some radios up- among them the air traffic control channels- and hear some very confusing radio traffic then later- an aerial re-fueling of one of the F-16's (was the "explosion" noise I heard the F-16 busting the sound barrier to get here?).

Anyway- NBC-Action News41- my employer- is reporting an F-16 was called in- apparently from Whiteman Air Force Base at Knob Noster- by tower authorities after a pilot of an unknown evidentally small aircraft was "making strange remarks" and "wouldn't talk to air traffic controllers" for a period of time.

NBC41 is reporting the that suspicious pilot and his plane was "forced down at Clay County (MO) Regional Airport by the F-16."

No more on this- here I had a story happening right under my nose and missed it (grin).

New Bush Poll Numbers Out

What amazes me is that "32-percent" believe this guy's doing an okay job and "28-percent" think the war in Iraq is going okay.

The poll says it samples "1,000 adults" so that means 320 and 280-people respectively think Bush is doing either okay overall or the war's going fine.

320 people out of 1,000.
Damn- wish I owned some swampland - you can sell one-third of Americans damn near anything it appears!

No Death In KC-KS Police Chase

At least not unless one of the 3 patients transported after their pickup truck crashed dies.

FIRST On Capt. Spaulding's blog- The three turns out to have burgled a Rent-A-Center of a big-screen TV when the cops saw them and chased them early Monday morning.

The information I had on "4" people in the pickup was from a report from the scene from someone who obviously has trouble with high numbers.

Metro Kansas City Communities Think Alone On Public Transit

A blog that sprang up around the time of the light-rail election - KC LightRail points out in a post today how the K.C. Metro is no closer to having a COMPREHENSIVE public transit plan.

The public transit issue is as every bit as important as another issue politicians seems to give only lip service to: comprehensive health care.

Just what- WHAT does it take to get it through everybody's head that the days of even $2-per-gallon gasoline is over?

The metropolitan areas that will continue to see growth will have an efficient multi-modal transit system that gets the people to the jobs and the attractions.

The path Metro Kansas City is on does not lead to the above example.

In the AP article - the maker of Zoloft "Pfizer Inc.- has said the drug "didn't cause his problems, nor did the medication drive him to commit murder." Although- "in 2004, the Food and Drug Administration ordered Zoloft and other antidepressants to carry "black box" warnings - the government's strongest warning short of a ban - about an increased risk of suicidal behavior in children."

KANSAS CITY'S WEATHER: Storms Increasing In Southern- Southeastern Kansas

The Tornado Watch for southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri will be expiring as the main tornado threat is now limited to a couple of counties in northeastern Oklahoma.

However- a large area of shower and thunderstorms continue to increase as they move more northeasterly out of central and northern Oklahoma.

This area as you see by the radar image below- is now in Kansas. It's moving more generally toward the K.C. Metro and will surely affect southern portions of the MetroRegion- especially Linn County Kansas which received up to 2.5-inches of rain earlier today.
