Central States News: Collision Between 2 U.P. Trains Closes Nebraska Railroad Mainline

A train carrying loaded coal cars enroute to Kansas City derailed as it was passing another train that was carrying empty coal cars from Kansas City- causing a massive pileup on Union Pacific's mainline tracks east of Kearney Wednesday evening.

According to the story in the GRAND ISLAND (NE) INDEPENDENT- a few of the eastbound UP train's cars loaded with coal derailed into the passing westbound train- causing cars on both trains to pile-up- and closing the UP's mainline through Nebraska.

Fortunately- no one was hurt- but UP crews will have to replace nearly one-half mile of the busy 3-track mainline before it can be re-opened.
