KC-KS Police tactical officers are converging on a command post set up at 5th Street and Washington to deal with a hostage situation nearby.
At an apartment in the 1500 block of North 9th Street just after 5 a.m.- a "black male" reportedly shot a person in the basement- then held 5 people at gunpoint in an upstairs room.
Police want to talk to the gunman about a shooting turned homicide in the 3000 block of South 8th Street around 4:22 a.m..
At 5:10 a.m.- one hostage reportedly got away.
Police surrounded the house and called for fire & EMS crews.
As of 5:40 a.m.- EMS was treating the hostage that got away for "an anxiety attack."
That person told police and EMS crews that there were "3 adults and 2 children- a 9-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl" involved and "one person shot in the head."
As of 6:45 a.m.- police report that "4 adults" who were hostages had been "released-" but there were "still" (the) 2 children inside" with the gunman.
At 7:40 a.m.- one of the hostages- reported to be the "male child-" was "released from the residence."
Nearly ten hours later- the suspect still has refused to exit the apartment on North 5th Street and police continue to surround the neighborhood.

Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon- the suspect finally surrendered to KC-KS police without incident.
