Elderly Man Dies in KC-MO Apartment Fire

Around 6:10 a.m. Monday morning- five companies of the KC-MO Fire department responded to an apartment fire in the 400 block of Highland- northeast of the downtown loop near the Pendleton Heights area of Old Northeast.

A "working fire" was reported at the 2-story building when the first fire crew arrived only minutes later- and very soon it was reported that a person was found inside the burning apartment.

The elderly male occupant was rushed by FD-EMS to a local medical trauma center with smoke inhalation and burns- and the victim reportedly died at that hospital a short time after he arrived.

Fire crews had the apartment fire out within 10 minutes- and the blaze caused nearly $40000 in structure and contents damage.

The cause of the fire was said to be "careless smoking."
