17 Found Alive in Joplin Tornado Debris

The good news...

According to MO Governor Jay Nixon- seventeen people were found alive Monday by rescue crews in the rubble of the EF-4/5 tornado that tore through much of southern Joplin MO Sunday evening.

However later Tuesday- Jasper County officials refuted Gov. Nixon's statement regarding the 17 survivors found- according to the SPRINGFIELD (MO) NEWS-LEADER.

As of Tuesday evening- only 9 persons had been recovered alive from the 6 mile-long path of debris they said.

The death toll stood at 116 Tuesday morning- with more than 1150 injured.

That figure was changed as well: there were 123 dead- but only 750 injured as of early Wednesday morning.

The intensity of the Joplin tornado was also upgraded- now rated by the NWS to be an EF-5- with winds in excess of 200 m.p.h.

Severe storms on Monday in Joplin caused more injury: a rescuer from Metro Kansas City was critically-injured by a lightning strike.

Jeff Taylor- 31- police officer from the Riverside Public Safety was in Joplin to assist with search and rescue and was riding an ATV back to a command post when a bolt of lightning struck "next to him-" according to the SPRINGFIELD (MO) NEWS-LEADER.

Additional search and rescue- as well as victim recovery is to continue this morning- with more chances for severe weather in Joplin as well as much of the Central States area later this afternoon into Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

This post is fairly incorrect. There were only 9 found on monday and tuesday, 124 fatalities, and 600 injured.

You are correct and the corrections were made.

The original figure of "17" came from Gov. Nixon.

And here I thought I had learned way back in the 1970's not to believe anything a politician named Nixon says....
