A guy tries to wheel a personal computer in a box out of a Walmart on West Kellogg Street without paying for it last Friday night- and store employee Heather Ravenstein tried to stop him.
The man ran off without the $600 computer after striking Ms. Ravenstein- but she was not badly injured- just shaken- according to the story in The WICHITA (KS) EAGLE.
Heather Ravenstein was further shaken when the next day- an assistant mamanger called her in his office and told Ms. Ravenstein she had been fired "for violating company policy" regarding shoplifters.
Trouble is- Ms. Ravenstein said she didn't know about such a company policy.
I guess WalMart Inc. would have been happier if the man had taken the computer and- so typical of today's screwed-up American society- the criminal walks and the good-intentions employee suffers.
Screw you WalMart!!

I've had this discussion with people before.
There is a very good reason that businesses have policies like this and I support those policies.
When citizens jump in the middle of a criminal act and try to be a hero, they endanger not just themselves, but every other employee and customer in the vicinity.
Criminals are unpredictable and you don't know what weapons they may be carrying or what sort of mental problems they may have. Especially when cornered or panicked.
It's better to let a theif get away with a $600 TV than have the theif panick, pull out an automatic weapon and start gunning down employees and customers.
Let them take the TV. File a police report. File an insurance claim for the loss. And everybody gets to go home alive.
Amateur heros get people killed.

I too know of and somewhat understand such policies- but did they have to FIRE the woman?
A suspension or some other appropriate discipline would have sufficed IMHO.
