Taxpayer Subsidy For Downtown Playpen Increases Substantially

K
ansas City's "Power & Light District" is also known as K.C. Live.

Maybe now it should be called Kansas City taxpayer-dollars' "black hole."

A recent adjustment on the worth of the downtown entertainment area- as reported by what's left of The KANSAS CITY STAR- lowered it's property taxes significantly- and thus increased the city's share of money to pay off the bonds that built the alky-hole.

Heh- increased the city's share SIGNIFICANTLY- from $4-million lost from city coffers this budget year to MORE THAN $10-MILLION next budget year (begins May 1-2010).

Ten million dollars a year now- out of municipal funds- to pay for what's basically an adult playground.

Ten million dollars that WON'T go to things like street and bridge repair- new water and sewer lines.

Ten million dollars that WON'T be there to improve crumbling and decrepit neighborhoods that are spreading like wildfire from old Northeast out here to southeastern KC-MO.

Oh- but K.C. Live will be nice and new and shiny (for a FEW more years anyway)- a good place to over-indulge in ALCOHOL while lamenting what happened to a once-great city like Kansas City-MO....
