From all that I've read- the Nebraska Furniture Mart people not only started the discussions between Wizards owners and the KC-KS government- Nebraska Furniture Mart ALSO owns the land the Wizards would be buying with STAR (taxpayer-subsidized) bonds.
Why stop there NFM?
You people ought to relieve us poor Missourians of the Royals and Chiefs too!
It's time the Kansas side of this so-fragmented Metro started subsidizing ALL of Metro Kansas City's "pro" sports teams.
We'll sell you both stadiums too. Good luck trying to move them across the state line.
Let's quit this childish competing with OTHER metropolitan areas and start fighting amongst ourselves for the ever-shrinking pieces of corporate pie.
Better yet- lets just put up a 20-foot wall along the state line that runs the length of Metro Kansas City with checkpoint gates at major streets and highways.
Meanwhile- I'll just pretend Kansas City-KS and the Nebraska Furniture Mart don't exist....

Are they going to pay their property taxes on this land? We quit shopping there after their tax "protest."
Wyandotte should change its name to Freeloaderdot.
This is what I am referring to:

From what I have read elsewhere, both the headline and first paragraph are incorrect. This is a very complex situation and the real villain here is once again Gene Bryant and his overappraisals. Furthermore, I wouldn't blame them for not paying the overappraisal simply because the UG's record in paying back even small citizen refunds is one of arrogance and dishonesty. The UG simply has no credibility in this area given the massive overcharges it has levied on virtually every homeowner in Wyandotte County. Furthermore, Joe Reardon can no longer pass the buck to Gene Bryant since Joe Reardon keeps appointing him knowing full well we're being overappraised.
Unfortunately, they are correct in appealing their tax appraisals. Edwardsville now has a budget crisis owing to the fact that the city had to return $150,000.00 that Gene Bryant overbilled a commercial concern their. Also recent state data indicate that the county as a whole is over appraised by 5%, a figure which actually masks much higher over charges on lower and middle priced homes.
Reardon needs to can Bryant and get a competent appraiser, unless of course it's Reardon's idea to overappraise our homes and rip us off.
Businesses like homeowners have the right to appeal tax appraisels. Don't blame Kansas and especially NFM for city government dragging their feet with the Bannister Mall project and causing Cerner and the Wizards to move elsewhere. As far as the Royals and Chiefs?? You can keep those heaps. They blew those projects also.
You can appeal it, but you cannot decide to NOT pay. There is a process. You don't dictate terms. I don't get to pick and choose which tax bills I pay. If I have a concern, I follow the rules. Apparently you feel that businesses are exempt from the rules that small property owners must follow.
The Dot would look worse than it already does if people just decided not to pay. There's an appeal process. Follow it.
I agree with you that there needs to be accountability. But the rule of law is the law of the land.
