SHAWNEE DISPATCH: Remembering Monticello Township's History

Long before being annexed by the cities of Shawnee and Lenexa- there was the Monticello Township that covered a considerable area of northern Johnson County KS.

Heck- I even remember their fire department being dispatched on calls in the 1970's!

The SHAWNEE DISPATCH has a nice story on the historic township that was established in the mid-19th Century and didn't totally disappear until annexations by established JoCo cities until 2006.

A member of the dept I was on his Dad was the Chief at Monticello.
Then another member of our dept moved out there and well some sort of a power struggle took place and the Chief was booted and the guy who moved out there was made the new Chief.

Ahhhhh firehouse politics how I do remember that BS.

But of note if I remember correct Monticello dept was the first fire dept in the metro area to get what was called the high pressure fog pumper unit. That baby would strip the shingles off a roof in one pass or rip a hay bale to shreds in seconds. Great idea that had it's place just never really seem to catch on.
