The National Weather Service (NWS) is concerned about possible repeating thunderstorms over our area beginning late Sunday and continuing through Monday morning.
The storms could be severe as well.
Some parts of the K.C. Metro- in south-central Johnson County-KS for instance- have already had more than one-half foot of rain since June 1.
Here's the "Hazardous Weather Outlook" text the NWS-Pleasant Hill office broadcast on the public-safety M.E.R.S. channel (154.13) just minutes ago...
THERE IS A SLIGHT CHANCE THAT SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS COULD BECOME SEVERE...WITH LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS THE PRIMARY THREATS...PARTICULARLY LATE IN THE AFTERNOON AND EARLY IN THE EVENING ALONG AND NORTH OF THE INTERSTATE 70 CORRIDOR.
THE COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED TO STALL SOMEWHERE ACROSS CENTRAL MISSOURI SUNDAY NIGHT...WITH REPEATED ROUNDS OF HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE FROM SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON.
COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF MOISTURE WILL LIKELY BE AVAILABLE...AND LIFT ALONG THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY WILL PROVIDE CONDITIONS FAVORABLE FOR THE ACCUMULATION OF SEVERAL INCHES OF RAINFALL IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME...SUCH THAT SERIOUS FLASH FLOODING WILL BE POSSIBLE WHEREVER THE HEAVIEST BANDS OF THUNDERSTORMS ALIGN. (Italics mine - GKM)
AT THIS TIME...THE MOST LIKELY AREAS THAT COULD RECEIVE EXCESSIVE FLOODING RAINFALL WOULD BE ALONG AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM LEAVENWORTH TO KIRKSVILLE.
IN ADDITION TO THE POSSIBILITY OF FLASH FLOODING...ANY WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAINFALL WOULD ONLY EXACERBATE THE ONGOING RIVER FLOODING PROBLEMS ACROSS THE OUTLOOK AREA THROUGH THE MIDWEEK PERIOD."
