The following weather bulletin was just issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for Metro and MetroRegion Kansas City:
.A POTENT WINTER STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE ACROSS THE AREA TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING.
THIS SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE WIDESPREAD ACCUMULATING SNOW. AT THIS TIME THE STORM TRACK WILL TAKE THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL ACROSS NORTHERN MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST KANSAS... WHERE CLOSE TO A FOOT OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE.
A SHIFT IN THE TRACK OF THIS STORM WILL SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT THE LOCATION OF THE HEAVY SNOW BAND.
IN ADDITION...VISIBILITIES MAY BE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED IN BLOWING SNOW LATE TUESDAY THROUGH AT LEAST EARLY WEDNESDAY AS NORTHERLY WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH OVERSPREAD THE REGION.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN KANSAS CITY/PLEASANT HILL HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 AM CST WEDNESDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.
* A MAJOR WINTER STORM IS EXPECTED TO IMPACT A LARGE PORTION OF THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN PLAINS. THIS STORM WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BRING SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 8 TO IN EXCESS OF FOOT OF SNOW TO AREAS OF NORTHEASTERN KANSAS...NORTHWESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL MISSOURI... ESPECIALLY NORTH OF A LINE FROM ST. JOSEPH TO CHILLICOTHE TO KIRKSVILLE.
* SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS NORTHEAST KANSAS AND NORTHWEST MISSOURI BY AROUND MIDNIGHT TONIGHT...SPREADING EASTWARD TUESDAY MORNING. THE SNOW WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES... AND WILL LIKELY CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY TUESDAY...INTO TUESDAY NIGHT...AND ENDING WEDNESDAY MORNING.
* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS GREATER THAN 7 INCHES ARE EXPECTED WITH LOCATIONS IN NORTHEAST KANSAS AND NORTHWESTERN MISSOURI SEEING MAJOR SNOW ACCUMULATIONS AROUND A FOOT.

* ENOUGH WARM AIR MAY WORK INTO THE SYSTEM THAT AREAS GENERALLY ALONG AND SOUTH OF MISSOURI RIVER WILL SEE A WINTRY MIX DURING THE DAY TUESDAY. RAIN...SNOW AND POSSIBLY SLEET ARE EXPECTED FROM KANSAS CITY TO CARROLLTON TO MACON BY TUESDAY AFTERNOON. AS COLD AIR BEGINS TO DIVE SOUTHWARD INTO THE SYSTEM...A RAPID WEST TO EAST TRANSITION BACK TO ALL SNOW IS EXPECTED BY LATE TUESDAY EVENING.
* TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO 8 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED IN THIS AREA.
* IN ADDITION TO HEAVY SNOW...SIGNIFICANT BLOWING SNOW IS POSSIBLE LATE TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY AS STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH OVERSPREAD THE REGION. THE BLOWING SNOW MAY GREATLY REDUCE VISIBILITIES...CREATING EVEN MORE DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS.
NOTE: Thus far none of these Winter Storm warnings include Metro counties SOUTH of the Missouri and Kansas rivers- but ALL of Metro Kansas City is in a Winter Storm Watch.
