Tornado Strikes Metro Lawrence KS

A large- rain-wrapped tornado continues on the ground moving northeastward from Douglas county KS..


The tornado missed the heart of the university town- striking parts south to east of that city of about 100000,


At least 7 injuries have already been reported when 2 vans- stopped along the side of U.S. 59 south of Lawrence- were blown over by the tornado.


Each van reportedly contained 7 people each- and at least 2 of those people have suffered serious injuries.


According to a news story later in the week from The KANSAS CITY STAR newspaper- the vans belonged to "Silver Lining Tours-"  a private company that takes paying customers on severe storm/tornado chases.




There are also many reports of homes and other structures damaged coming in on radio scanners.




Update:  Thursday- May 30:  

The NWS has determined that it was an "EF-4" tornado that tore from southwestern Douglas into southern Leavenworth counties Kansas on Tuesday evening.



Official reports say that 21 injuries occurred in the Kansas tornado- 18 in Douglas and 3 in Leavenworth counties.

Authorities say "3" of those injured were "serious injuries."


In addition- an "EF-2" tornado formed from the same supercell storm in northeastern Clay county Missouri.


No injuries were reported along the Missouri tornado track.



About 4 dozen structures- ranging from residences to commercial businesses- were damaged and/or destroyed in both tornadoes .

Tornado Strikes Missouri Capitol Jefferson City

A significant tornado has struck parts of Jefferson City.


The tornado struck around 11:45 p.m. late Wednesday night after having moved northeast from an earlier strike in or near Eldon MO..


Major damage and multiple injuries have been reported by several public agencies.


Scanner traffic from the JCFD is revealing numerous rescues and evacuations in progress.

The number of injured or if anyone has died was unknown as of 1:45 a.m. Thursday morning.


Thursday morning the situation became more clear ... officials report about "two dozen" injuries but "no fatalities."

Damage videos showed a tornado strength of EF-1 to EF-3.

Fortunately- warnings were issued some time in advance of the storm and the tornado itself wasn't stronger.

Tornado Strikes Golden City MO

An unstated "law enforcement" agency reported "major structural damage in the Golden City area" due to a large tornado passing in or close to that town shortly after 9 pm..



Golden City is a small town with a population of about 765 people- located in southeastern Barton county MO or about 30 miles northeast of Joplin.


As of 1:45 a.m. Thursday morning- it was reported by Barton county officials that 3 people had died in Golden City with no reports on the number of injuries.




The storm is part of a large area of severe storms from east-central and northeast Oklahoma- southeast and east Kansas and western and southwestern Missouri.
