At 5:12pm- fourteen (14) KC-MO Fire companies were sent on a "high-rise response" to the KCP&L's Hawthorne power plant at 8400 Hawthorne Road in the East Bottoms.
The plant is northeast of the I-435 & Front Street intersection.
Firefighters arrived and waited- only to find out at 5:22pm the fire is at the Bayer plant next door.
Chief 104 reports "smoke and fire showing" at the Bayer plant a minute later. The Bayer plant contains many chemicals.
At 5:24pm- a 2nd-alarm was requested and seven (7) more fire companies were sent- more than half of the KC-MO Fire Dept. companies in the city..

UPDATE - 1943 CST - This fire- which was reported by the KC-MO FD as being a solvent used in making herbicides- was declared under control about 6:15pm.
The fire was in a tower-like structure that contained piping carrying the burning agent. Firefighting foam was applied to the fire via flypipe from a ladder truck. The Southern Platte Fire Protection District (Parkville) assisted with their foam unit.
No damage estimates were yet available and there were no reported injuries.
