The De Soto City Council has continued the ban against bicyclists on 83rd Street east of Kill Creek Road in northern Johnson County KS- although that thoroughfare is the most direct route to the larger cities to the east such as Lenexa and Shawnee- says The DESOTO EXPLORER.

This is odd as I don't know of any other streets in Metro Kansas City that bicyclists are flat-out banned from using- but as most of you know in Johnson County- the car is king.

83rd between Kill Creek and the De Soto/Lenexa line has many "blind" hills with poor sight lines. There is also no shoulder to speak of on many parts of 83rd. I believe that the city council banned traffic (other than vehicular) as a safety concern, probably to prevent litigation against the city. Walking is forbidden as well. It is a terrible inconvenience to residents and area bicyclists, but I doubt the city has the money to improve the road to the extent that would be necessary for public safety. They did recently repave 83rd between Kill Creek and the city limit, which has improved the situation greatly, but the poor sight lines and blind hills remain.
